  The Loya Jirga

The Loya Jirga, occasionally loya jirgah, is a large meeting held in Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and even in Mongolia. In Afghanistan originally attended by Pashtun groups but later including other ethnic groups without really considering them.

In the afghanic (pashtunic) society the Loya Jirga is still maintained and very strongly practiced, mostly in front of tribal chiefs or with them to solve internal and external tribal problems or disputes with other tribes. The member of the Jirgas were mostly members of the Royal Family, religious leaders and tribal chiefs of Afghans.

There is no time limit in a Loya Jirga and the meeting take so long since decisions are made by agreements. Many different problems are advised, like foreign policy, declaration of war, legitimacy of leaders or the introduction of new ideas and laws.

The Loya Jirga Tent

After the fall of Taliban Regime the Afghan Grand Assembly, Loya Jirga was held on Monday June 10, 2003 and continued until June 16. The Loya Jirga is considered to be a fateful political process in the determination of the destiny of governance of the Afghan nation.

More than 1500 delegates sat under a huge tent given by the government of Germany for the purpose of establishment of a transitional government for Afghanistan. The transitional government will be responsible for the preparation of a draft constitution for the country as well as preparation for holding of general elections for the establishment of a permanent government in the country in about 18 months.

After the fall of Taliban regime, in June 2002 the first government of Afghanistan was formed by Loya Jirga. This event took place at a tent on the campus of Polytechnic University, which had especially been built for housing and gathering 1500 representatives.

Since then, the tent is being used for national and International gatherings by business and ministries, such as "ECO's" second Regional Trade and Investment Conference, first ICT Conference, Pak- Afghan Peace Joint Jirga and etc.

The tent is fully air- conditioned with back up power supply, fast Internet connection and experience in housing big inventions.
